Is League City By-passing Environmental Concerns?
April 2010

League City is proposing a FM 518 bypass which will create dangerous walking situations for school children and destroy a nature preserve, wetlands and a bird sanctuary.
This area of wetlands is a refuge for local wildlife and is one of the areas that make League City a desirable place to live. There are several endangered or threatened species that will be affected in this area. The Brown Pelican, 4 kinds of hawks… the list goes on.
The proposed route of 518 by-pass is a result of a land swap initiated by Altair development which will give Tantalus Bay 3x more commercial frontage on both 518 bypass and FM 270.
Tantalus Bay has already clear-cut 61 acres. It appears the developer did this without regard to the community or wildlife in the area. Now that 61 acres have been destroyed they want more land to create access for their development. The 518 bypass.
Altair Development is also responsible for the failed constellation point development. They have a very poor record of commitment to the community.
Many people believe the 518 By-pass will help with the traffic flow.
Instead
it will create more traffic, air, noise polluting due to the Tantalus Bay development and their need for a four lane highway to enhance access to their unfinished site.
Expediting traffic through our town may be an admirable goal (or not), but not at the expense of the quality of life of the community.
