Vegan Society of P.E.A.C.E. (People for the Earth, Animals, Compassion & Enlightenment)
Business Description:

The Vegan Society of P.E.A.C.E. (People for the Earth, Animals, Compassion & Enlightenment) is a grassroots nonprofit community organization which promotes PEACE and Compassion for ALL sentient beings. We are dedicated to ethical vegan living, animal rights advocacy, environmental responsibility, peace and nonviolence. Since the formation of our organization in 2004, we continue to be a 100% volunteer-run.

Our headquarters is in Houston, Texas, and our membership base is global thanks to support from members around the globe. We offer educational and social events in the Houston area, organize community outreach and exhibits, work with local media, participate in community service to help people and animals in need, and coordinate a growing local vegan support network. Members of our global Community Network also receive our free monthly newsletter and can join our interactive message board forum.

Outreach, education and advocacy are our 3 main goals. Our outreach efforts include the following annual education campaigns: MEATOUT, EARTH DAY, World Farm Animals Day, World Vegetarian Day, World Go Vegan Days and World Animal Rights Day. In 2006, we also launched our Texas "Veggin'-out" Days Campaign, which takes place annually in October. As part of our outreach, we host events & educational classes in an effort to bring awareness to these issues. We also work in conjunction with other area groups on campaigns and events throughout the year. In addition, we strive to be a support network for people who care about the earth, the animals, compassionate living and the search for knowledge and enlightenment.

How we contribute to a greener Houston:
As a grassroots nonprofit community organization, we advocate for vegan living. Vegan living is green living, as it is environmentally and ethically responsible, as well as healthy. Our organization is an exhibitor and many local festivals and we have held film screenings and distributed literature showing the connection of our diet to global warming, environmental degradation, sustainability and world hunger. All life on the planet is connected. Everything we do has an impact, from the foods we eat to the products we buy. Many people don't often stop to think about how their choices affect other living beings and the environment. The Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations published a ground-breaking report in November 2006 on the connection between global warming and animal agriculture, showing how the livestock sector generates more greenhouse gas emissions than all forms of transportion. Even more stunning is the November 2009 World Watch Magazine report, which asserts that animal agriculture is to blame for at least half of the human-made greenhouse gases. Vegan living is sustainable living. If more Houstonians could shift to a vegan lifestyle, we'd be healthier and happier and more environmentally responsible in the way we live.
